Training for Webmasters

If you are creating a gallery after a Group event such as a coach ramble or a weekend away, then many members are likely to have photos to contribute. In such cases, collecting all the photos together can be a problem. However, the following approach has been found useful by Stoke and Newcastle group:
  • create a folder on the server to receive the images. This could be within Event Manager and have a name such as images/eventgallery/2022_arran, or could be one you set up for the purpose
  • if you dont have them already, install the free utilities "Easy file uploader" and "Easy file listing" - see Installation of Extensions
  • Create an Article with information about the event, and a menu entry to display it
  • Create a new Module of type "Easy file uploader" pointing to the upload folder and assign it to this new menu entry so as to appear alongside the article. This will show allow anyone to upload photos directly, even from their phones.
  • Create a new Module of type "Easy file listing" pointing to the upload folder and assign it to this new menu entry. This will show details of files uploded so far
Once all the photos have been uploaded, you can edit / select / reseqence as appropriate. If you have uploaded then straight into the Event Gallery folder, then there is an option to "Sync database" that registers then all to to Event.

Although Event Gallery has many advanced options, one area where it is very poor is the ability to specify the required sequencing. This is more conveniently done with a desktop photo manager such as Photos. The recommended approach is to start by uploading into a temporary folder, then use HCP and FTP  to download them all to your local computer for resequencing. Then export them with filenames that sort then into the correct sequence, and finally import these new photos straight into the Event Gallery event.
