Joomla is a Content Management System (or CMS) and is designed to allow creation and modification of content using a system of menus, and without any need for programming knowledge. If is extremely sophisticated and flexible, but inevitably this means it is relatively complicated and on first sight it can seem daunting. Many settings are cascaded through different layers: they can be configured from the System menu at, say, Article level and unless they are over-ridden at a lower level these setting will have effect. However, at a lower level it is possible to over-ride these settings on an individual Article. However, the team of Ramblers volunteers will have done a great deal of customisation to the site before it was delivered to you, and in the majority of cases will already have configured it so that you will be able to accept all the defaults.

That being said, there is a great deal of scope, should you so wish, to enhance it still further and personalise it to fit the needs of your particular Area or Group. A popular way of doing this is to add additional menu options to deal with local interests, such as long-distance footpaths, local organisation etc.
